The Origin of the Modern Necktie

Today neckties are a common part of everyday life for many of us. We wear them to weddings, graduations, religious services, and anytime you need to elevate your outfit. However, ties weren’t always a symbol of professionalism and style like they are to today. Approximately 400 years ago the modern neckties ancestor, the cravate, came to France tied around the necks of Croation mercenaries (source). 

The Croation mercenaries wore cravates out of function: to keep their jackets closed. However, French King Louis XIII took a liking to this neckwear and implemented their adoption in France (source). 

However, the true origins of the necktie may remain shrouded in history. Archeaological research has discovered neckwear on 3500 year old mummies in Egypt and 2200 year old terracota statues in China (source).
